headspace Early Psychosis  of Uniting an early intervention service for young people aged 12 to 25 years. The service supports those young people who are experiencing a first episode of psychosis or are at risk of experiencing psychosis. Psychosis involves the experience of symptoms such as, confused thinking, false beliefs (delusions), hallucinations, changes in mood - such as ongoing depression and changed behaviours, such as irrational anger.

Role Overview

The Vocational and Educational Coordinator (VEC) contributes toward and implements the delivery of the Individual Placement Support (IPS) principles as outlined by Orygen Youth Health. The VEC engages with and supports young people in their psychosocial recovery through their involvement with a variety of interventions, revolving around vocational and educational programs.

Duties and Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Provide employment and educationally oriented activities to young people in the service by implementing the IPS principles. This includes but is not limited to delivering intervention in a group and/or on an individual basis.
  • Work collaboratively with families and/or significant others including relevant support services, to engage and respond promptly to young people’s mental health, developmental needs, and phase of illness within a recovery framework.
  • Provision of assessment and engagement of new and/or current young people that can be home-based and/or in the community.
  • Ensure that IPS principles are maintained and upheld within the service.
  • Essential Criteria:

  • Tertiary qualifications and/or relevant experience in facilitating training.
  • Experience working within the Disability Employment sector and preferably with people with mental ill health.
  • Experience providing career counselling and/or a member of the Career Development Association of Australia (CDAA).
  • Demonstrate an understanding of educational providers and the admissions system for TAFEs, universities, and secondary skills.
  • Ability to use communication skills (written and verbal) as well as problem solving and negotiation skills to effectively network with clinical staff and various service providers.
  • Demonstrated ability to be self-motivated and function autonomously while being able to effectively work in a multidisciplinary team.
  • Ability to maintain the philosophy, standards, and policies of the EPPIC model and the organisation and to promote the recovery of young people with a first episode of psychosis.
  • Demonstrated commitment to supervision and ongoing professional development.
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation such as the Mental Health Act (2007) and the Children and Young Persons (Care and Protection) Act (1998) and other relevant legislation.
  • Current unrestricted NSW drivers licence
