About the Job
The Aerostructures Innovation Research Hub (AIR Hub) will be a world-class, Victorian-led collaboration between Swinburne University of Technology, CSIRO, industry, and research partners. AIR Hub has been designed with Aerospace and Advanced Manufacturing leaders to reinforce the State’s pre-eminent position in advanced composites manufacturing for civil aerospace projects and accelerate development of composites manufacturing for integrated structures and airframes in eVTOL urban passenger, cargo, and aeromedical air vehicles. The research will leverage the Swinburne-CSIRO Industry 4.0 Testlab for Composites Manufacturing, a $15m investment for collaborative projects with industry partners using automated composites manufacturing technology. The Testlab will enable research into digitalisation of composites manufacturing and the development of model-based engineering approaches for the aerospace sector.

This position of Research Engineer at the AIR Hub will undertake applied engineering work in the fields of:

• Advanced composites,
• Intelligent manufacturing processes,
• Design and digitalization in aerospace structures.

The Research Engineer will play a key role in supporting the delivery of demonstrator projects applying research to real world aerospace challenges. The output of the Research Engineer will showcase automated composites manufacturing and, through digitalisation, model-based engineering and design and development process improvement for industry partners. In particular, the successful candidate will be expected to provide expertise in mechanical design of tooling and thermal modelling of the oven heating systems used by industry partners for composite cure during the manufacturing process. The Research Engineer plays a key supporting role in ensuring delivery and best practice engineering

This expertise will also be required for supporting the research and experimentation/testing on specific products and deliverables. The Research Engineer shall be an expert in the latest tools and systems for digitalisation as well as knowledgeable in the aerospace industry, its materials and manufacturing processes. The Research Engineer shall support heavily on work associated with the Industry 4.0 Testlab. The Research Engineer will collaborate effectively with industry partners, research partners and internal Swinburne team members to ensure delivery of demonstrator project and develop excellent relationships across the AIR Hub supply chain including service, material and equipment suppliers. This role will report to the respective Project Leader the Research Engineer is assigned but will be required to work to the Director of the AIR Hub supporting project proposals and concepting.
