About the Role
This PhD is jointly supported by the Aerostructures Innovation Research Hub (AIR Hub), and l’Office National d’Etudes et de Recherches Aerospatiales (ONERA), France. ONERA is the national aerospace research facility in France, supporting both civil and military aerospace development.
Both the AIR Hub and ONERA are leading the design of innovative air vehicles, particularly airframes in eVTOL urban passenger, cargo and aeromedical air vehicles. These new aerospace applications present unique aerodynamic challenges in aeroelasticity, i.e. understanding how the aerodynamic forces exerted on them can cause the aircraft to deform, morph or vibrate. Understanding this is crucial both from an aerodynamic performance and efficiency perspective, but also for aerostructure design, accounting for structural performance, design for manufacture and damage mitigation or avoidance where unwanted vibrations can diminish aerodynamics and prematurely fatigue and fail the structures.
Our team is investigating how these vibrations arise, how they may be controlled, and how they will impact new air vehicle performance and design. This PhD will focus on developing the fundamental knowledge required to allow designs to be successful and to be manufactured. Simulation and digital twinning, experimentation and manufacture of wings and similar structures, and optimisation will underpin this research effort.
The AIR Hub is seeking people who wish to work at the cutting edge of technology and application and have the aptitude to undertake solution focused research. Students will have individual projects, working within a collaborative team including industry and research stakeholders to deliver impactful outcomes for next generation aerospace technology. Through the international collaboration with AIR Hub and ONERA, students will have the opportunity for a global team approach and exchange.
About You
To be suitable for this role you will need to have experience in the below key accountabilities:
- Communicating effectively with peers, industry partners and suppliers to achieve collaborative outcomes, including in cross-functional teams
- Working both independently and as part of a team in a collaborative manner
- Being enthusiastic, self-motivated with a demonstrable aptitude for research and development.
- Eligibility to work in Australia, travel to France and seek temporary working or movement rights within both countries
Qualifications
- A 4 year Bachelor/Honours degree or a coursework Masters degree with a minimum average of 70% in the final year of study (H1 or H2A) or a Research Masters in Engineering or Science or a Bachelor’s degree with relevant work experience.
