NCLS Research is a world leader in research focused on connecting churches and their communities. Decades of rigorous and thoughtful research has examined wellbeing, spirituality, and church health. The most well-known five-yearly project is called the National Church Life Survey, which has had millions of participants. Our mission is to use credible research to identify signs of hope, to nurture life in both leadership and churches as well as to encourage the wider community to reflect on its spiritual journey and the churches place within it.

NCLS Research is a collaborative venture between church denominations and social service agencies.  Uniting currently provides employment services for some NCLS Research staff. This position reports to the Director of NCLS Research and is located within the Church Engagement Team of the Mission, Communities, and Social Impact Directorate of Uniting (NSW & ACT Synod). 

ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

NCLS Research is recruiting for one full-time Business Development Manager to join a multidisciplinary team. The position is full-time, fixed-term till June 2023.

The Business Development Manager is responsible for developing new business opportunities to expand the research undertaken by NCLS Research to enhance longer-term sustainability. The role will include developing and implementing marketing strategies, support of new product development, sales of research services and products, grant-writing, and other fund-raising. Integral to the role is interacting with practitioners, university partners, church and government agencies. This role will require limited interstate travel.

There are no direct reports, but may offer supervision of casual or part-time staff to assist with business development tasks (e.g. graphic designers, web developers, etc)

In 2021, we will run the seventh National Church Life Survey.  This is an exciting and demanding national project, made up of multiple research projects across 20 Christian denominations.

ABOUT YOU

You will have training and experience in business development, marketing, and sales. Your strengths will include;

  • Segmental marketing, events oversight to promote existing and future projects of NCLS Research
  • Grants application and management experience with a strong working knowledge of how major research funding bodies operate.
  • Good financial stewardship, to achieve set budgets for new and repeat research projects, prepare and submit management reports outlining performance against budget
  • Excellent verbal and interpersonal communications skills, including highly-developed influencing and negotiation skills.

YOUR SKILL SET WILL INCLUDE:

  • An ability to disseminate research information and outcomes to enhance the reputation of NCLS Research
  • An ability to consult and cultivate productive working relationships with practitioners, policymakers, and academics
  • A firm commitment to social justice and interest in the research and policy areas covered by Uniting’s services

YOUR QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Tertiary qualifications in a relevant discipline (e.g. social science, business, communications, or marketing)
  • Demonstrated track record in sales and marketing and demonstrated capacity to administer and manage a sales and marketing program
  • An understanding of and willingness to work within the Christian ethos and across different faith traditions

EVEN BETTER:

  • Higher degree qualification in a relevant field
  • Familiarity with the Christian churches across Australia
  • Being familiar with denominational and other Christian networks and having some level of involvement in these networks.
