About the
Life Without Barriers is seeking a dedicated and pro-active Community Peer Support Worker to provide one-to-one peer support and facilitate support groups.

This is a max term contract until the 30th June 2021 with the possibility of extension.

As a Community Peer Support Worker 20% of the role will be to provide one-to-one low level psycho-social support services which focus on client - determination, empowerment, hope and belief that recovery from an addiction is possible.  The other 80% will be facilitating peer led support groups.

Key Responsibilities

  • Facilitate peer led support groups which bring together participants who share common interests and aspirations. This will help develop knowledge, build skills, find, and provide access to resources to support the participants in their recovery journey. Groups might focus on a range of areas, including social and recreational activities, health, wellbeing and fitness, mental health and developing coping strategies. Along with Building life skills, gardening, healthy eating, creativity, and the arts.
  • Support clients to develop their own support plans in partnership with Life Without Barriers, Community Mental Health services and carers.
  • Liaise and collaborate with clients, their community and community support agencies such as mental health, housing, and other services to ensure an integrated and timely service.
  • Monitor and review clients’ progress through the service and against the case plan and provide up to date progress reports to the partner organisations.
  • Sensitively ascertain information about the client’s health, family, and cultural background.
  • Observe and accurately record the client's behaviour, needs and interactions with others and keep case plans and files up to date.

 

 Skills & Experience

  • Certificate IV in Mental Health or Alcohol and Other Drugs or  Certificate III or IV Mental Health Peer Work highly desirable, lived experience will also be considered.
  • Current First Aid Certificate.
  • Current Driver Licence.
  • Must have roadworthy vehicle/fully insured and willing to drive for work purposes.
  • Previous experience in working with people with alcohol and other drugs addiction.
  • Demonstrated ability to positively engage, interact and work with people who have complex needs.
  • Comprehensive understanding of the Recovery Framework and the underlying principles.
  • Well-developed verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with people from Diverse Cultural Backgrounds with specific reference to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Successful candidates will be required to clear probity checks including National Criminal History Record Check and Working with Children Check (where relevant to the role).
